Take the time to get to know the area in a different way, without using the car, and discover the joy of starting your hike from your own doorstep.
From Villar d'Arène, you'll have the chance to drive through an authentic mountain village that will take your breath away. What's more, you'll discover the hamlet of Valfroide, a place with a rich and singular heritage in the Pays de la Meije. These houses, cut off from all electricity, where people only live for part of the year, hold in their stones the history of transhumance and mountain traditions.
To get there, you'll have to cross the main road to take a varied path that cuts across the fields, allowing you to quickly gain height and admire the view that gradually emerges. As you climb further, you'll come to the first parking lot at Lac du Pontet. *At the parking lot, yellow signs point the way to l'Aiguillon along a wide, gravelly and occasionally grassy track. *After a while on this track, you'll branch off onto another narrow dirt path to reach the Col de l'Aiguillon. *At the pass, you'll see a yellow sign with an arrow pointing down to Valfroide on an easy, straightforward path. *Turn right across the pond to reach Entraigues, le Pré Rond and finally Valfroide. *Once in Valfroide, take the carriage road to the hamlet of Les Hières in the direction of La Grave.
