The Petrifying Fountain - Hike from Singuigneret (Mizoën)

Discover the Fontaine Pétrifiante waterfall, a veritable refuge for biodiversity and home to rare and threatened ecosystems. On the balcony path leading up to the waterfall, you'll enjoy a panoramic view of Lac du Chambon and the Uissans peaks!

Starting from Singuigneret, a hamlet of Mizoën, set out on a hike to discover the wonders of the Ferrand Valley. You’ll follow a trail that runs along the ridgeline above the Romanche River, overlooking Lake Chambon; you’ll discover Lake Lovitel and its interactive signs that explain the unique features of the local flora and fauna. You’ll wander through the ruins of the hamlet of Les Clots, where only a staffed mountain hut remains, before climbing up to the Fontaine Pétrifiante waterfall: there, you’ll discover a tuff field, a true haven of biodiversity home to rare and endangered ecosystems. The waterfall is part of the European Natura 2000 network and protected by a Prefectural Decree for Biotope Protection (APPB).

On your way back, take a break at the refuge in the hamlet of Les Clots, which serves meals, to fully enjoy the idyllic setting of this spot, with its panoramic views of the Uissan peaks.

From the Singuigneret parking lot, follow the signs for Les Clots or the GR 54 C (red and white). You’ll begin your hike on a trail that winds through a shaded area.

Shortly afterward, the trail narrows and the trees become sparser. The trail runs along a ledge. The route includes a few sections where the path is narrower; cables are provided to help you make your way.

For the first 2 kilometers, the climb is fairly moderate and gradual. Starting at the 2-kilometer mark, the climb becomes steeper but remains gradual for 1.23 km, until you reach the hamlet of Les Clots. Before reaching the hamlet, you’ll pass near Lake Lovitel, where you can take a short detour.

Then you have a choice: return to the trail or continue past the orientation table located at the top of the rocky promontory, next to the lake.

Situated on a plateau, the hamlet of Les Clots offers a peaceful atmosphere, along with views of the Fontaine Pétrifiante and La Meije.

From the hamlet, to reach the top of the Cascade, continue along the GR 54 C trail. The path becomes steeper and rockier.

The Cascade is a protected area: do not stray from the trail.

Just before reaching the top, you’ll need to step over small streams—be careful, as the ground can be slippery!

Once you reach the top of the waterfall, since this is a round-trip route, you can retrace your steps back to the parking lot.
